18% of PEI Residents Considering Cannabis Purchase

MQO Research spoke with 400 residents of Prince Edward Island about their plans to purchase cannabis once it becomes legal and how they planned to make their purchase.

In Prince Edward Island, 18 percent of respondents would consider to purchasing cannabis once legal:

  • 9 percent said very likely
  • 8 percent said somewhat likely
  • 15 percent not very likely
  • 65 percent said not likely at all

There were regional, gender, and age divides in the province. Here are the regional numbers for those who are very likely or somewhat likely to purchase cannabis:

  • 21 percent in Queens
  • 13 percent in Kings
  • 13 percent in Prince

More males are considering purchasing cannabis than women once legal: 23 percent of males and 13 percent of females.

Those under 55 are far more open to purchasing cannabis than those over 55:

  • 39 percent of those 18 to 34
  • 16 percent of those 35 to 54
  • 9 percent of those 55 and older

Finally, we asked those who were very or somewhat likely to purchase cannabis if they planned to do so in person or online:

  • 66 percent said at a retail location
  • 20 percent said online

Data collection occurred by telephone from April 16th to May 8th, 2018 and included 400 randomly selected residents from across the province. The margin of error is ± 4.9 percentage points 19 times out of 20.
